The 4th subject rule: how much it adds to GPA
SSC, Dakhil, HSC and Alim each have one ‘4th’ or optional subject — Higher Mathematics or Biology in science, Agriculture or Home Science in other groups. It never lowers a GPA; it can only raise it.

The rule in one line
4th subject point − 2 = bonus; the bonus is added to the compulsory subjects' points, you divide by the compulsory subjects alone, and GPA never goes above 5.00.
The bonus for each grade
| 4th subject grade | Point | Added | GPA rises, over 9 subjects |
|---|---|---|---|
| A+ | 5.00 | 3.00 | 3.00 ÷ 9 ≈ 0.33 |
| A | 4.00 | 2.00 | 2.00 ÷ 9 ≈ 0.22 |
| A- | 3.50 | 1.50 | 1.50 ÷ 9 ≈ 0.17 |
| B | 3.00 | 1.00 | 1.00 ÷ 9 ≈ 0.11 |
| C | 2.00 | 0.00 | 0 |
| D | 1.00 | 0.00 | 0 |
| F | 0.00 | 0.00 | 0 |
So the bonus starts at B (3.00); C, D or F add nothing — and take nothing away.
Example: one student, four 4th subject results
Say the 9 compulsory subjects total 36.00 points (an average of 4.00). Here is the GPA as the 4th subject's grade changes:
| Compulsory total | 4th subject | Bonus | GPA |
|---|---|---|---|
| 36.00 | A+ (5.00) | 3.00 | 4.33 |
| 36.00 | A (4.00) | 2.00 | 4.22 |
| 36.00 | C (2.00) | 0.00 | 4.00 |
| 36.00 | F (0.00) | 0.00 | 4.00 |
How the 4th subject helps towards GPA 5
GPA 5 over 9 subjects needs 45 points. An A+ in the 4th subject brings 3, so 42 from the compulsory subjects is enough.
Say three subjects at A (4.00) and six at A+: 30 + 12 = 42, 45 with the bonus, 45 ÷ 9 = 5.00.
But with an F in any compulsory subject the bonus is no help — the GPA is 0.00.
Common mistakes
- ‘Fail the 4th subject and you fail the exam’ — no. An F there just means no bonus.
- ‘Divide by 10 with the 4th subject’ — no. You divide by the compulsory subjects alone.
- ‘A+ in the 4th subject can take GPA past 5’ — no. However high the sum, GPA stops at 5.00.
- ‘A C in the 4th subject still adds something’ — no. C is 2.00; take away 2 and nothing is left.
Done for you in your school's results
In BDEducationManager, mark a subject as the 4th subject and every exam's results follow this rule by themselves — the bonus, the division and the 5.00 cap. In Classes 9 to 12, Higher Mathematics starts out as the 4th subject.
Questions
Is it the same rule at HSC?
Yes. At HSC, Dakhil and Alim too, the 4th subject adds its point less 2. Only the number of compulsory subjects differs, so the rise differs — at HSC, over 6 subjects, an A+ bonus is 3 ÷ 6 = 0.50.
Does the 4th subject have a pass mark?
It is passed or failed like any subject (33%, part by part). But failing it does not fail the result — there is just no bonus.
Does golden A+ need an A+ in the 4th subject too?
Yes. ‘Golden A+’ means an A+ in every subject on its own, the 4th included.
