How SSC GPA is calculated
Marks to grades, grades to points, points to GPA — the whole calculation in three steps. The rules below come with examples; Dakhil works the same way.
Checked against the boards' rules on
Step 1 — marks to grade and point
Each subject is graded by its percentage of the full marks. 80 out of 100 is A+, and so is 40 out of 50.
| Out of 100 | Out of 50 | Grade | Point |
|---|---|---|---|
| 80–100 | 40–50 | A+ | 5.00 |
| 70–79 | 35–39 | A | 4.00 |
| 60–69 | 30–34 | A- | 3.50 |
| 50–59 | 25–29 | B | 3.00 |
| 40–49 | 20–24 | C | 2.00 |
| 33–39 | 17–19 | D | 1.00 |
| 0–32 | 0–16 | F | 0.00 |
A pass needs at least 33% in each subject — and 33% in each part on its own: CQ, MCQ and practical. Short in any one part, and the subject is F however high the total.
In a CQ 70 + MCQ 30 subject, that means at least 23 in CQ and 10 in MCQ.
Step 2 — which subjects count
GPA comes from the compulsory subjects' points. Bangla 1st and 2nd papers make one subject, English 1st and 2nd papers another — the two papers' marks are added for one grade (66 out of 200 to pass). SSC usually has 9 compulsory subjects:
- Bangla (1st + 2nd paper)
- English (1st + 2nd paper)
- Mathematics
- Religion and Moral Education
- Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
- Bangladesh and Global Studies or Science — by group
- The group's three subjects — in science, say, Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Higher Mathematics
Beyond these is a 4th (optional) subject — it does not count in the division and only adds a bonus (step 3). If the board changes the list in a given year, its latest notice is what counts.
Step 3 — working out the GPA
Add up the compulsory subjects' points; add whatever is left of the 4th subject's point after taking away 2; then divide by the number of compulsory subjects. A result above 5.00 is still GPA 5.00.
GPA = (compulsory subjects' points + 4th subject bonus) ÷ number of compulsory subjects; bonus = 4th subject point − 2 (0 if it is 2 or less)
| Subject | Grade | Point |
|---|---|---|
| Bangla | A | 4.00 |
| English | A- | 3.50 |
| Mathematics | A+ | 5.00 |
| Religion | A+ | 5.00 |
| ICT | A | 4.00 |
| Bangladesh and Global Studies | A | 4.00 |
| Physics | A- | 3.50 |
| Chemistry | A | 4.00 |
| Biology | A+ | 5.00 |
| Higher Mathematics (4th subject) | A | 4.00 |
- The 9 compulsory subjects' points = 38.00
- 4th subject bonus = 4.00 − 2 = 2.00
- GPA = (38.00 + 2.00) ÷ 9 = 4.44 — grade A
- Without the 4th subject it would be 38.00 ÷ 9 = 4.22
When it is GPA 5, and when it is a fail
- A+ in every compulsory subject is GPA 5.00 without the 4th subject.
- With an A (4.00) in one subject and A+ in the 4th: 44 + 3 = 47, 47 ÷ 9 = 5.22 — GPA 5.00.
- An F in any compulsory subject is GPA 0.00 — a fail — even with A+ in everything else. The 4th subject bonus cannot help then.
- An F in the 4th subject takes nothing away — there is just no bonus.
From GPA back to a grade
The overall grade comes from the GPA too:
| GPA | Grade |
|---|---|
| 5.00 | A+ |
| 4.00–4.99 | A |
| 3.50–3.99 | A- |
| 3.00–3.49 | B |
| 2.00–2.99 | C |
| 1.00–1.99 | D |
| 0.00 | F |
HSC, Dakhil and Alim
HSC, Dakhil and Alim work the same way — the same grade table, 1st and 2nd papers and 4th subject rule. Only the number of compulsory subjects differs (HSC usually has 6), so that is what you divide by.
This calculation, done for your school's exams
In BDEducationManager, once teachers enter the marks, each subject's grade, the GPA, pass or fail and merit place are worked out by these rules — papers together, each part's pass checked, the 4th subject bonus added. Term, annual, test or model test — every exam.
Questions
Is the total divided by 10 with the 4th subject?
No. However good the 4th subject, you divide by the compulsory subjects alone; the 4th subject adds only its points above 2.
Low in Bangla 1st paper, high in the 2nd — what then?
The two papers are added and counted as one subject, so the pass and the grade go by the total out of 200.
Are GPA 5 and golden A+ the same?
No. GPA 5 means an average of 5.00 — the 4th subject bonus can help get there. ‘Golden A+’ is when every subject, the 4th included, is an A+ on its own.
How many decimal places does a GPA have?
Two — say 4.44 or 3.89.
