How merit places are set
“3rd in class” on a result sheet often raises questions about how it was reached. Below is the rule step by step, with an example; BDEducationManager sets merit places this way.
Checked against the boards' rules on
This guide is written by BDEducationManager — management software for Bangladesh's schools, colleges, madrasas and coaching centres — admission, results, fees, attendance and SMS in one place. See the software
Three rules
- 1
Passed first, then failed
Those who passed every subject come first; anyone who failed a subject comes after all of them, however high their total.
- 2
Then the total
Within each, the higher total comes first. The total — not the GPA.
- 3
Equal totals share a place
Two with the same total share a place, and the next is the very next place — 2nd, 2nd, then 3rd.
An example
| Student | Result | Total | GPA | Merit place |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Riya | Passed | 812 | 5.00 | 1 |
| Tanvir | Passed | 798 | 4.89 | 2 |
| Sumaiya | Passed | 798 | 4.83 | 2 |
| Fahim | Passed | 790 | 4.94 | 3 |
| Rakib | Failed | 805 | 0.00 | 4 |
Tanvir and Sumaiya have the same total, so both are 2nd; the one with the higher GPA is listed first.
Fahim's GPA is higher than Tanvir's, but his total is lower — so he is 3rd.
Rakib's total is 805, but he failed a subject — so he comes after everyone who passed.
In the section, or the whole class
Whether merit places are within each section or across the whole class is the institution's choice. Set it once in Settings and every exam's results follow it.
Other schools may use other rules
- Some look at the GPA first, and the total only to break a tie
- Some skip a place after a tie — 2nd, 2nd, then 4th
- Some give no merit place to those who failed
Whichever rule you follow, one line under the result sheet saying so saves guardians' questions.
Questions
Of two with GPA 5, who comes first?
The one with the higher total. If the totals are equal too, they share the place.
What about a student who was absent?
There are no marks in the subject they missed — so it is not passed, and they come after everyone who passed.
Is it all done in a click?
Yes. Once the marks are in, a click gives the whole class's GPA, pass or fail and merit places; a draft first, published once checked.
