How HSC GPA is calculated
Three steps, as for the SSC — marks to grades, grades to points, points to GPA. Two things differ: nearly every subject has two papers, and the division is by 6 compulsory subjects.

This guide is written by BDEducationManager — management software for Bangladesh's schools, colleges, madrasas and coaching centres — admission, results, fees, attendance and SMS in one place. See the software
Step 1 — marks to grade
Each subject is graded by its percentage of the full marks — the SSC's scale. A two-paper subject adds both papers' marks out of 200; 80% is 160, and 66 passes.
| Out of 100 | Out of 50 | Grade | Point |
|---|---|---|---|
| 80–100 | 40–50 | A+ | 5.00 |
| 70–79 | 35–39 | A | 4.00 |
| 60–69 | 30–34 | A- | 3.50 |
| 50–59 | 25–29 | B | 3.00 |
| 40–49 | 20–24 | C | 2.00 |
| 33–39 | 17–19 | D | 1.00 |
| 0–32 | 0–16 | F | 0.00 |
CQ, MCQ and practical each need their own pass mark as well; short in any one part, and the subject is F.
Step 2 — which subjects count
HSC has 6 compulsory subjects — three for everyone and three of the group:
- Bangla (1st + 2nd paper)
- English (1st + 2nd paper)
- Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
- The group's three subjects, each 1st + 2nd paper — in science, say, Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Higher Mathematics
Beyond these is a 4th (optional) subject, also of two papers. It does not count in the division and only adds a bonus. If the board changes the list in a given year, its latest notice is what counts.
Step 3 — working out the GPA
Add up the six compulsory subjects' points; add what is left of the 4th subject's point after taking away 2; then divide by 6. A result above 5.00 is still GPA 5.00.
GPA = (the 6 compulsory subjects' points + 4th subject bonus) ÷ 6; bonus = 4th subject point − 2 (0 if it is 2 or less)
| Subject | Grade | Point |
|---|---|---|
| Bangla | A | 4.00 |
| English | A- | 3.50 |
| ICT | A+ | 5.00 |
| Physics | A | 4.00 |
| Chemistry | A- | 3.50 |
| Biology | A+ | 5.00 |
| Higher Mathematics (4th subject) | A | 4.00 |
- The 6 compulsory subjects' points = 25.00
- 4th subject bonus = 4.00 − 2 = 2.00
- Without the 4th subject it would be 25.00 ÷ 6 = 4.17
- GPA = (25.00 + 2.00) ÷ 6 = 4.50 — grade A
When it is GPA 5, and when it is a fail
- A+ in all six compulsory subjects is GPA 5.00 without the 4th subject.
- With an A (4.00) in one subject and A+ in the 4th: 29 + 3 = 32, 32 ÷ 6 = 5.33 — GPA 5.00.
- An F in any compulsory subject is GPA 0.00 — a fail — even with A+ in everything else. The 4th subject bonus cannot help then.
- An F in the 4th subject takes nothing away — there is just no bonus.
Questions
How many subjects is the HSC GPA divided by?
By 6 — Bangla, English, ICT and the group's three subjects. The 4th subject is not in the division; it only adds a bonus.
Do the two papers get a grade each?
No. The two papers' marks are added for one grade out of 200 — 160 or more is A+, for example.
Does the software work out HSC GPA itself?
Yes. The two papers graded together and the 4th subject's bonus — by the board's rules; enter the marks and the GPA and merit places follow.
